Coat-of-Arms legend: Legend
My Ancestor Jean Leclerc and his wife Marie Blanquet arrived in New France around
1660, likely accompanied by Marie’s father, Adrien Blanquet, a widower at that time.
On 10 August 1662, before notary Paul Vachon , Jean obtained his land grant on Île d’Orléans,
a large island in the St. Lawrence River just east of Quebec City.
The concession was located in the fief of La Chevallerie; four arpents on the riverfront to a
depth of about 33 arpents. Jean, Marie and their first three children, Pierre, Marguerite and
Anne, are listed as residents of Île d’Orléans in a census of 1666. On 4 March 1673, Jean
acquired a plot of 3 arpents in river frontage, located in the seigneurie of Dargentenay.
Jean’s widow was listed as a landowner in the parish of St-Pierre, Île d’Orléans, in a census of
1689.
Jean Leclerc (baptized in France 24 Aug 1635, died about 1680 during a return visit to his
homeland?) married around 1657 near Dieppe, France to Marie Blanquet (born in France 1631-08-31,
died on Île d’Orléans 1709-09-10 at the age of 78), daughter of Adrien Blanquet and Catherine
Lafrenière. Jean and Marie had nine children born between 1658 and 1674 including our ancestor
Charles. His descendant Jean Thomas, my great-grandfather, came to Saskatchewan at age 57 from
Minneapolis with 4 sons; and in 1903 registered the first homesteads in the R.M. of Turtle River
at the location of present-day Vawn.
